ORTHOPEDICS/LEG, FOOT & ANKLE
Talking about foot pain (which the medical term is Metatarsalgia) is describing symptoms that causes pain under the ball of the foot.
Reasons and Therapy
There are many reasons of foot pain that occurs frequently in association with foot deformities, although it may occur without an apparent structural irregularity as well.
Foot Pain reasons
Foot pain called also Metatarsalgia happens between the arch and the toes.
The medical term for foot pain, Metatarsalgia, comes from the bones name located in this part of the foot: the metatarsals.
The metatarsals are long bones at the base of each toe.
Sometimes pressure on the metatarsal end shows signs in the ball of the foot.
Many other reasons of foot pain may create damages in other parts of the foot, such as: Toe pain, Arch pain, Heel pain (underneath the heel), Posterior heel pain (behind the heel)
Other variations comprise irregular joint orientation (increased extension) of the joint of the metatarsal with the toe.
Note that traumatic damages, as well as cracks and tendon tears, can cause this kind of foot pain.
X-ray is commonly one of the tests used to make a diagnosis of Metatarsalgia.
Foot Pain Therapy
Anti-inflammatory medicines, footwear changes and shoes additions are the common therapy of foot pain.
Metatarsal pads are also best for the Metatarsalgia therapy.
If these simple steps do not alleviate foot pain, a specialist should be visited.
Cortisone injection may be used as well to prevent inflammation of the forefoot. Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine, and the injection delivered directly to the zone of the problem allows a high concentration of this medicine.
In some cases, foot pain necessitate surgical process.
The common surgical process is called a metatarsal osteotomy to correct the aberration of the metatarsal bone.
An osteotomy is a surgical technique to adjust bone’s alignment.
