The Lower Leg Anterior Tibialis Muscle

ORTHOPEDICS/LEG, FOOT & ANKLE

The tibialis anterior muscle is the muscle situated in the front part of the lower leg shinbone.

This muscle starts from below the knee, crossing down the shin front to finally reaches and attaches to the foot top.

Tibialis Anterior Muscle/Task

The tibialis anterior muscle main role is serving to help ankle flexion and foot off the ground, (as it happens when drumming the foot).

This muscle assists as well to pull the foot in, (a movement called inversion).

In addition, the tibialis anterior muscle helps lifting the foot arch.

Tibialis Anterior Muscle/Problems

Some difficulties may happen with the anterior tibialis muscle and may consequently cause motion’s restrictions, suach as: Shin immobilization, weakness in the muscle, Anterior tibialis tendonitis and Shin lumbago pain

If a problem occur with your anterior tibialis muscle, emphasizing shin, ankle, foot pain, or even weakness preventing the anterior tibialis proper functioning, A visit to the doctor or physical therapist should be done in order to check anterior tibialis problems, principally those that cause a motion weakness loss of functional mobility.

Tibialis Anterior Muscle/Therapy

Physical therapy may extend to various steps in order to help improving the anterior tibialis muscle mobility.

Classic therapy measures may include: Anterior tibialis stretching, anterior tibialis Strengthening trainings, Kinesiology tape, muscle massage and Neuromuscular electrical stimulation to help improving the muscle neuromuscular enrollment.

The anterior tibialis muscle may also weaken when suffering a sprained ankle or ankle crack that necessitate a long period of immobilization; therefore, if the anterior tibialis muscle is weakening enhancing pain, or tightness in the lower leg or shin, a visit to physical therapist is recommended to evaluate the state and provide the adequate therapy accordingly.
